The Magic of Mornings

9.9.2014

I feel like there is something so special about morning time. The light is gorgeous in our apartment {one of my favorite things about being on the second floor}, everyone is happy to be awake and to see each other {usually}, and I just re-fall in love with my family and the wonderful role of "mother" that I get to take on for another day. It's a great way to start the day!

On this morning in particular Irelyn slept in so I got to cuddle with Holland for a little while and then we ate breakfast together. When Irelyn woke up Holland was so excited to be the first one to hear her. She rushed into their room to attempt to get Irelyn out, rushed back to me to announce that baby sister was awake, and then raced me back to the room and by the time I got there both girls were giggling and just so happy to see each other. Also, Race was home for a few minutes when the girls first woke up and they were so happy to see him and hang out with him for a few minutes. I felt truly blessed.

And a random side note (lest you all think every morning is magical):
The next morning was not wonderful and beautiful. Irelyn was up a lot during the night so I was exhausted and grumpy, Race was not able to be home helping out, Holland woke up really crabby and fought me about everything and threw a BUNCH of tantrums, all before 8 AM, and it might have even been cloudy outside just to top it all off. Haha. Often pictures, videos, blog posts, Instagram, etc. can make life look so perfect {and honestly this morning felt like a little piece of Heaven} but know that I have crazy mornings/days/moments too. I'm just not usually taking pictures when I'm feeling crabby {and the light is gloomy}! Haha.

Sunday Family Photos 08.17.2014

These are from the first Sunday in our new ward {We moved about a month ago--I don't think I've written about that yet}.

We are loving our new apartment and the ward we moved into. Holland hasn't cried once going to nursery {!!/Knock on wood} and we are already making some new friends! We haven't always been super great at being involved in some of our previous wards and are trying to make a better effort this time around. We haven't missed a Sunday yet so that's a good start!

I really like trying to match everyone on Sundays and today I felt like it worked out particularly well so of course we had to take pictures! Holland was not in the mood at first but as soon as she knew she could show off her new cupcake toys {thanks Aunt Tyne!} she was fine.

I sure do love this family of mine!

Irelyn's Birth Story

Irelyn’s actual birth story is not that long but I have a lot I want to preface it with. I feel like I learned so much from both of my birth experiences and I think it is so important to share what we learn with those around us so I’m going to start Irelyn’s story with a preface. If you want to skip forward to the actual story you are welcome to (I bolded where it starts)!

Holland’s birth twenty months ago was a pretty hard experience for me. (You can read about it here—part 1, part 2, and some of the after effects here). If you don’t have time to read all of that you mostly just need to know that I ended up having a C-section when I had planned to have a natural, unmedicated birth. I honestly did not realize the implications of having a C-section until I was in the OR and my midwife happened to mention that the doctor doing the surgery was really good about stitching me up in a way that would make me a great candidate for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). That is when it really hit me: Holland’s birth would affect all of my future births.

When I got pregnant with Irelyn I knew my goal was to have a VBAC. I immediately went on a local Facebook forum and asked if people knew of any VBAC friendly doctors in my area. I was so grateful to get TONS of recommendations from the ladies in this group. I was also told about a forum on Facebook all about VBACs (VBAC Facts Community—anyone who has had a previous C-section should check out this forum and website to learn more about VBACs/RCS (Repeat C-Sections)). I joined the group on Facebook and started researching the many doctors recommended to me.

I found a wonderful doctor and my pregnancy passed quickly (thanks to Holland keeping me nice and busy!) without any complications. I made sure to talk to my doctor about my plans to have a VBAC at every appointment and the more I talked to him the more supported I felt. I would come home from each appointment just so grateful to have such a supportive doctor.

As I got closer to my due date I felt like I needed to mentally prepare for whatever birth experience I would end up having. I felt like I needed to face the reality that things might not go the way that I wanted. At this point I really felt like the most important thing I could do to prepare for this birth experience was to take my concerns/fears/desires to my Heavenly Father and then let things happen the way He planned. The last few weeks of my pregnancy I went to the temple a few times, read my scriptures, wrote down scriptures and hymns that I could read before/during/after labor for comfort, and said a LOT of prayers. I knew that having a C-section again was something that I might have to face and I wanted to be able to feel peace with whatever birth experience I ended up having.

My due date came and passed uneventfully, just like Holland’s. Let me tell you, going over your due date is not fun at all! I do not wish it upon anyone. With Holland I remember crying every day I went over my due date. I would go to bed every night thinking, ‘Tonight could be the night!’ and waking up every morning was really disappointing. This time I wasn’t quite so upset but I didn’t know if I could emotionally handle going two weeks over again and then going through the same labor experience just to end up with a C-section again. So just after my due date passed I started praying about whether or not I should schedule a Repeat C-Section. This was something I had not even seriously considered my entire pregnancy and honestly, before I started considering it I had thought it was absolutely ridiculous for people to schedule Repeat C-Sections for their personal convenience. But, here I was considering it. And as I prayed about it I felt peace. I felt like it was an okay decision for me to make and this was a reminder to me not to judge others for their decisions.

I had an appointment the following Wednesday (40 weeks and 3 days) and I talked to my doctor about scheduling a C-section. I went over the pros and cons with him and explained my reasons for coming to this decision. He was very supportive and understanding of my decision and we scheduled the C-section for one week later (41 weeks 3 days) with the hospital. He reminded me that if I went into labor before then that of course we would still try for the VBAC. I cried on the way home from that appointment because I felt like I was giving up on my lifelong dream of experiencing natural, unmedicated childbirth. I prayed and let Heavenly Father know that I was trusting in Him that things would happen the way they were supposed to. After getting my tears out I again felt at peace with my decision. I knew that I was still giving my body/my baby time to start things and I also had a week to come to terms with having a C-section if that’s how things turned out.

And then things actually started happening.

Thursday through Saturday I had Braxton Hicks for a couple hours each night but they would inevitably fizzle out and be gone when I woke up the next morning. I did not have these with Holland at all though so that was definitely a positive change! Saturday during the day I did some serious nesting. I am not an awesome housekeeper (just ask Race) but Saturday I deep cleaned our kitchen and bathroom and just did other general house cleaning things. I spent hours cleaning and organizing. I’m sure we’ve all heard stories about people doing serious nesting RIGHT before their babies come and I’m not going to lie, I was hoping this all meant something for me but I also didn’t want to get my hopes up too much. So I went to bed hoping I would wake up to contractions in the night or to my water breaking or something but I woke up the next morning a little disappointed. I couldn’t be too sad though because it was Easter!

Race, Holland, my brother Solomon, and I headed to church and enjoyed some wonderful talks and musical numbers speaking of Christ and His wonderful sacrifice for all of us. I was pleasantly surprised to notice that I was experiencing Braxton Hicks (during the day!!) so we headed home after Sacrament meeting so that I could get some rest and see if the Braxton Hicks were going to turn into anything more.

At home we ate a delicious Easter dinner, hid Easter eggs for Holland, ate lots of yummy candy, rested, and just enjoyed the afternoon together. The Braxton Hicks got a little bit stronger but they weren’t any closer together or really regular at all. I wasn’t getting my hopes up that Irelyn was on her way just yet. I did start looking up some information on Spinning Babies about how to turn a posterior baby while in labor. I was pretty sure that Irelyn was posterior just like Holland and I didn’t want to end up with a C-section because I couldn’t push this baby out. So around 8:30 PM with my contractions becoming a bit stronger but still somewhat irregular I decided to try some abdominal lift and tucks. In between/during contractions I did some work, showered with Holland, tried to rest, helped put Holland to bed, and just tried to see if things were progressing. I was totally in denial that things were really happening until 11:13 PM when I texted my mom telling her that the contractions were stronger and closer together but that I was going to try and rest and time them for a few minutes before we decided to head out the door.

I didn’t end up being able to rest at all. Race and I started getting last minute things ready to go, and over the next 45 minutes while we rushed around things finally started to feel real to me. I really had to stop and concentrate when I had a contraction and I didn’t have much time between contractions. I kept trying to braid my bangs so they would be out of my face during delivery but after trying to quickly do that between 3 contractions I gave up and just twisted them back quickly.

At 12:00 AM we headed out the door to the hospital. My mom has always said that you don’t leave until you don’t want to get in the car. I hadn’t intentionally done that but the car ride was absolutely the hardest part of my labor. It was not fun to labor in the car at all. My contractions were close and very strong the whole drive so the drive felt like much longer than the 30 minutes it actually was. I responded to a text from my mom asking how close contractions were saying “Not sure. 1-3 minutes. 1 minute long. Really strong. Car is bad.” So eloquent. Haha. On the car ride I was a little ridiculous during contractions but Race just kept comforting me—letting me know that we were getting close and holding my hand.

We arrived at the hospital around 12:30 AM and I had to stop two or three times on the very short walk from the car to the ER to squat through contractions. At this point I had realized that I was feeling the need to push and I couldn’t really help trying. We were taken up to labor and delivery and I was admitted into triage at 12:35 AM. I got into my gown quickly and the triage nurse checked me. She didn’t actually say how dilated I was but as she walked out of the room she said to the other nurses “She’s good to go.” I wasn’t sure what that meant but immediately after she walked out I kind of pushed through a contraction and my water broke…all over the triage floor. It was seriously so loud and so much water that I was convinced for a half second that my baby had just shot out of me! Super ridiculous, I know, but it was really super loud! All the nurses heard it so they rushed right in and got me moved into a labor and delivery room right away. By 12:39 AM I was hooked up to monitors and by 12:50 AM I was pushing.  Pushing felt AMAZING. It felt so good to push through the contractions and to know that my body was doing just what it was supposed to. The entire time I was pushing I was just thanking Heavenly Father for this wonderful experience. At 1:09 AM Irelyn Sage Ashby came into the world and was immediately placed on my chest where she stayed for the next hour or so. Eventually we found out that she weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and was 20 3/4 inches long. I was so in shock at how wonderfully things had gone and so grateful and happy to meet my sweet baby girl and to have had such a wonderful delivery experience.

My doctor was unable to make it to my crazy fast delivery but the doctor on call was wonderful! Dr. Bradley did some massaging of my perineum while I pushed to help avoid serious tearing, which I was so grateful for. The nurses were also amazing. They coached me a little on how to push more efficiently and then just let me do my thing. Afterwards they said they wanted me to come back and teach classes on how to have a successful VBAC and one nurse kept telling me that I had such amazing control while pushing at the end that it seemed like I had an epidural. I was so grateful for the loving, encouraging words and was just so overwhelmed with joy at how wonderfully the whole experience had gone. Even though our experience with Holland was a little scary and loooong and exhausting for Race and I both, Race was still so supportive of my decision to have a VBAC. He was my constant support and he was so happy to have had such a wonderful experience this time around. I am so grateful for him and I am so grateful that we were both able to experience such a healing, beautiful birth. I am also grateful to have learned so much from my birth experiences, and I feel like because of my very different experiences I can be more understanding and empathetic towards people who have had all kinds of births.

And now for some photos!

Last bump photo on Easter Sunday {41 weeks}

Sweet new baby with Mom.

Meeting Dad for the first time.

So tiny and adorable.

Our first "family picture". Holland is holding her new baby doll while Race shows her Irelyn and I'm hiding back behind the faucet in the reflection. Haha. Holland is absolutely in love with her "baby sisser"!

Halloween 2013

Our Halloween was just perfect! The morning started out  in cute Halloween jammies and hanging out with cousin Madison. These girls just have too much fun together! Especially when they aren't fighting!

That evening we got the girls dressed up to go trick-or-treating. Holland and Madison were little Pocahontas girls. I made their tutus, Tyne found their cute necklaces at American Eagle and then we grabbed a couple of things from their closets and Hobby Lobby to complete the look. We thought they looked pretty adorable in their costumes! They had TONS of fun trick-or-treating. Knocking on the doors and grabbing handfuls of candy! Holland always wanted to go back for more! We made it to quite a few houses and luckily it wasn't too cold for the girls. It definitely wore Holland out because she slept great that night!

We didn't get any family pictures so this will have to count.
{Also, can you spot my 16.5 week baby bump?!}

Our three trick-or-treaters: Ava, Madison, and Holland {who didn't look in any of the group photos!}

When we got back to the house we let the girls dig into their candy for a few minutes while we watched an episode of The Walking Dead. It is kind of Halloween tradition for Race and I. The second year we were married we watched a bunch of the first season while passing out candy. I got so scared every time someone knocked on our door--I was pretty happy when we ran out of candy. The show still scares me so I mostly tune out but it is definitely a fun tradition!

It was a successful Halloween! I loved dressing Holland up and hey, I can't complain about free candy! Maybe next year we'll actually do some type of family costume...we'll see! I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

In Other News.

This is happening. :]

Holland doesn't seem to be too excited about getting a sibling! Haha.

We're all pretty excited to welcome Ashby Baby #2 next April and I'm attempting to teach Holland that there is a baby in my belly. Mostly she just thinks my belly button is super cool stuff.

The official due date is April 13th, 2014 and we can't wait to meet this second baby! I am 15 weeks along today (Sunday) and we just had our first doctor's appointment on Friday. We love our doctor and I am really hoping to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean). We'll see what surprises this labor and delivery brings though since Holland's birth story did not go at all the way I was planning! Hopefully I'm a little more prepared for the unexpected this time around!

I'm excited to talk more about my birthing plans and thoughts about preparing for the unexpected and stuff like that. I've been doing a lot of research on all things birth related {even more than I did with Holland--and I did A LOT with her!} and I'm really excited for this new journey--no matter how it turns out!

I'll do a pregnancy update/comparison to Holland's in another post but I just wanted to finally let the cat out of the bag! We're having a baby!!!

Stuck. {A Mini Post}

I've been so stuck when it comes to blogging. I have about a billion things I want to/should blog about for journaling's sake but I've just been feeling overwhelmed. I've written entire blog posts that I just can't figure out titles for so I never post them. And then I have TONS of posts I want to write about my feelings towards birth and stuff in that department but I have SO much that I want to say and I just haven't found the time or energy to get it all written out in a logical way. Does anyone else just get stuck when it comes to finding titles for their posts or have any of you gotten stuck because you just have too much to say? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has been in this boat--right?

Anyway, I am going to "unstick" myself for five minutes and write a quick post while Holland and Race are out of the house for a few minutes and just do a quick life update. Here's what our past couple of weeks have looked like:

I got to see four of my eleven siblings and my parents and even got to have my two sisters stay with me for a week and then my mom and Gelsey stay with me for another week! {Helena and Gelsey pictured-- my parents, Stuart and Solomon unpictured}

We were all able to head over to Oregon for my Great Grandma Usher's memorial service. It was simple and perfect and Holland slept through the whole thing. We got to hear lots of fun memories of our Grandma and visit with lots of family.

Holland has been teething and got this goofy tooth that's like 1.5 teeth or two teeth just super close together. Race and I are not passing on good genes in the teeth department--our poor children!

We had family pictures taken and the next few pictures are just pictures I snapped while our awesome photographer friend was taking pictures of Race's sister and her family {she had a double duty photo shoot!}. Taking pictures is so much more work with a baby! Haha. But I can't wait to get the pictures back and I know it is so worth it to have the memories to treasure forever. It was also fun for me to practice taking pictures with our nice camera. I don't pull it out nearly enough and while a BUNCH of the pictures turned out blurry I still love them. :]

So that's what's been going on over here. Hopefully I'll stop feeling quite so stuck and get some of the posts that have been floating around in my head for months up on the blog! We'll see!

Happy Easter!

Today was wonderful! After hearing some beautiful testimonies at church this morning we were able to spend the rest of this beautiful Easter Sunday with some family and friends having a picnic at the park. The day was gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the company was the best! Holland LOVES being outside and around people so it gave me some time to relax. Here are some pictures of our Easter Sunday!

Family photo!

Holland sitting in a chair that is just her size!

These girls REFUSED to look at the camera! Silly ladies!

Crawling away from the camera.

My wonderful man!

I am in love with her sunhat! And amazingly she actually leaves it on...most of the time.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter Sunday!

Questionnaire About Race & Me

My good blogging friend and real life friend Kylie tagged me in this fun post with questions about how things work in our marriage/relationship. I hope you enjoy getting to know Race and I a little better!

PHOTO CREDIT: LAUREN BRIMLEY
{Side note: Race and I really need more pictures of just the two of us! This is from a year and a half ago!}

1. Who is your man?
Race W Ashby

2. How long have you been together?
Since we started dating: 3 years and a couple of months

3. Dating/Engaged/Married?
Officially dating February 26, 2010 // Engaged May 27, 2010 // Married September 3rd, 2010 {Pretty fast, eh?}

4. How old is your man?
He just turned 25!

You or your man?

1. Who eats more?
I would say I do. Race eats WAY more sweets but not very much when it comes to actual meals. And since I've been pregnant/breastfeeding I eat A LOT.

2. Who said "I love you" first?
This is embarrassing but Race and I actually don't know. He says that I said it first and I say that he said it first. Haha. I honestly can't remember the exact moment it happened. I guess I might need to go back and read some journal entries about it!

3. Who weighs more?
Race. Although when I was pregnant I think we were pretty dang close to the same!

4. Who sings better?
Definitely Race. I'm not very good and I'm embarrassed to sing so that doesn't help at all.

5. Who's older?
Race by a little bit under two years.

6. Who's smarter?
Race says it totally depends on the subject. I would say we're pretty close in smartness although Race is a WAY better writer.

7. Who's temper is worse?
Mine. Definitely. Race is pretty level headed but I get mad and I don't let it go until we talk it out and find a solution.

8. Who does the laundry?
Almost always me. Race will switch it over for me when I ask him to but I don't mind doing the laundry for the most part and I'm really particular about how things get folded and put away so I just take care of it.

9. Who does the dishes?
It used to be pretty even but I would say that now I do them more. Race has made a goal to always do the dishes before playing video games though so that might change! {Also I should give Race credit for the housework he does that aren't in these questions. Race ALWAYS takes the garbage out. I have taken it out MAYBE five times since we've gotten married. Also Race almost always does the sweeping, mopping and vacuuming. He's awesome!}

10. Who sleeps on the right side of the bed?
If you're facing the bed then I do. We always sleep the opposite of our normal when we aren't in our own bed though. I don't know why but it always happens.

11. Who's feet are bigger?
Race's. Although if mine grow every pregnancy and decide not to shrink back to their normal size then I might just catch up! Haha. Not really but I'd be close. Although nevermind I don't know how shoe sizes translate between genders...

12. Who's hair is longer?
Mine. Thank goodness.

13. Who's better with the computer?
Race. I know just enough to get by.

14. Who pays the bills?
Both but mostly Race. I am always in charge of the phone bill but Race usually takes care of the rest.

15. Who cooks dinner?
Almost always me. Race is convinced he doesn't know how to cook anything other than heating up a corn dog in the microwave. I'm sure that's not the case but he's at work til late every night anyway so it just works for me to cook.

16. Who drives when you are together?
Race almost always does. I actually really don't like driving so I won't do it unless he's not feeling good or something.

17. Who pays when you go out to dinner?
Usually Race but we have joint accounts so it's not like it really makes a difference. Race is learning a skill that my dad has {that I love} where as soon as the waiter/waitress brings your bill you have your card ready for them so that you aren't waiting around all night for them to come around again. I just like it because you can stay and chat for however long but when you are ready to leave you don't have to try and get their attention.

18. Who's the most stubborn?
I think that I am more often stubborn but Race definitely has a few things that he is really stubborn about.

19. Who is the first one to admit when they're wrong?
I would say we're pretty evenly split on this one. Although we both say that we are first to admit when we are wrong more than the other one. Haha. At night though it's usually me because I can't fall asleep mad at Race. I just have to cuddle with him and I don't cuddle when I'm mad so I just have to decide to get over it and say sorry.

20. Whose parents do you see more?
Neither now that we live in Idaho. When we visit we try to spend equal time with both of our families. When we lived in AZ it was definitely my family. They were closer and there were a lot more baby blessings and family things to go to.

21. Who kissed who first?
Race kissed me first.

22. Who asked who out?
Race asked me out after inviting himself over bearing the gift of ice cream.

23. What did you do?
On our first date we had a pirate theme because we may or may not have watched a pirated movie. So we went to Michael's and got crayons and candles to make pirate candles and then we went to Target to get some sparkling cider {the bottles were also for the pirate candles} and then we picked up Subway for dinner and headed over to Race's apartment to watch Avatar and make our awesome pirate candles.

24. Who's more sensitive?
Definitely me. I think Race has cried maybe twice since I've known him.

25. Who's taller?
Race. He is 5'10" and I am {almost} 5'1"

26. Who is more indecisive?
Usually me. Although when it comes to picking something to watch off of Netflix or something Race can browse for hours. I'm not sure if that's because he is indecisive or because he just enjoys browsing. Hmmm.

27. Who has more siblings?
Me. I have eight brothers and two sisters and Race has two sisters and two brothers.

28. Who wears the pants in the relationship?
Race says that he does and I would probably agree.

29. Who has the best husband ever?
That would be me!

And now I tag Kara of Not a Couple's Blog and Alexis of Alexis Laughs and anyone else who would like to do this because I would love to read your answers! It's fun to see how different everyone's relationships are.

Race's Birthday!

I love birthdays! Race's was this last Sunday {St. Patrick's Day} and we had a fun little celebration with friends and family. I also got to surprise Race with the gift that he had been telling me he wanted for the past oh, four months! He brought it up about a billion times the week before his birthday and I had him convinced that I had decided it wasn't worth the money so I just got him other stuff for his birthday! I had actually ordered the present {a fancy leather jacket} online but I didn't think it would make it here in time for his birthday. So I wrapped a shirt from Target in a box with a picture of the leather jacket underneath the shirt and a note that I had ordered it BEFORE he started bringing it up this week to say he wanted it. After I had wrapped the shirt the jacket actually got here in time for his birthday so I got to wrap it as well! I made sure to have him open the shirt from Target first. His first surprise was that I had already ordered the jacket! He was talking about how cool the jacket was and telling everyone why it was such an exciting gift and then I had him open the jacket and he was super surprised! Aaand I got a video of it. Maybe it's not cool to anyone other than me but here it is anyway!

Happy Happy Birthday to my favorite person in the world! I'm glad I could make your dreams come true! You are the best husband and father and I am so grateful for all that you do! I love you Race Husbandface!

Sweet Holland's Newborn Photos

I am FINALLY getting Holland's newborn photos posted! I won a giveaway on Facebook just after we had Holland for a free photo shoot. I was so happy since we didn't have the money to pay for a photo shoot at the time. It was wonderful to work with Rennai of ten22studio to get these sweet sweet photos of our baby girl. Enjoy!!

Just to be real, this is how Holland was the majority of the time.
I'm amazed that our photographer was able to get any good pictures of our crying little one!

And now onto the exciting news of the day: Race got a job! Along with a bunch of other job interviews! So now he may have a few things to choose from! We are excited to start looking for an apartment and have our own space for the first time since a couple of months before Holland was born! Life is wonderful! {This paragraph had lots of exclamation points. But let's be honest, this is exciting stuff!}

Oh, and we have a new giveaway winner for the modestpop.com giveaway! The winner is #13 Rachel Frakes! Thanks again to all of you who entered! And don't forget that you can get 10% off with the code: RANDE10. I'm pretty sure they have a sale going on right now but it ends soon so check it out!!

5 Tips to Be Happier in Your Post-Baby Body

Now that you all have heard my thoughts on body image I thought I would share a little bit more about what it's like having a post-baby body and what I am doing to be be healthy and to love my body.

Some people seem to get their bodies right back after having a baby. That might actually be true for some people but I'm pretty sure for most of us it takes quite bit of work to get our bodies back to where we would like them to be. After spending a whopping 42 weeks pregnant and getting stretch marks ALL over my body I am more uncomfortable in my body than I have ever been before. But, I have been doing lots of different things to be happy in this incredible body that created a baby. And surprisingly they don't all involve working out like a crazy maniac. Here are my five tips to being happy in your post-baby body:

1. Get out of bed and get dressed. As hard as it can be to get up and get dressed every day I do believe this is one of the most important things to do to feel better about your body. Even if it doesn't happen until four in the evening {as it often does for me} it can still help to brighten your day. Other things I try to do along with getting dressed are the little things like my hair and makeup. And I even bought some nail polish {in a pretty fall color} and had Race watch Holland for a few minutes so I could paint my nails.

2. Get out of the house. Now this isn't something I have accomplished every day but I do feel that it is important to do and it kind of goes hand in hand with getting dressed. It gives you a reason to put some cute clothes on.  Sometimes getting out of the house just means going on a family walk for a few minutes but it still changes things up which I think we all need. And you get to show off your baby to everyone you run into!

3. Treat yourself to some new clothes! A few weeks after I had Holland I was really unhappy with my sparse clothing collection. {Most of my pre-pregnancy clothes are still in storage and the clothes I wore during pregnancy I am a little bored with since I wore them a lot the last few months. Also, ALL my pre-pregnancy jeans were packed away.} So I went shopping. We are on a tight budget right now {while we're hoping and praying that Race finds a job here in Idaho} so I just got myself one really nice pair of jeans...that actually fits. They were expensive {at least compared to what I normally spend on jeans} but they are the most comfortable pair of jeans I've ever owned and I am going to make them last for a long time! {Check out Levi Curve ID jeans} Since our budget is a little tight I have started sewing myself things to save on money. I made myself a shirt by making a pattern off of a shirt from Old Navy that I absolutely love {and hides the post-baby bump quite well}. I am still pretty new to this whole sewing thing so it didn't turn out perfect but it hides the bump and I learned from my mistakes so I'll do better next time! I also have plans for some new skirts and a couple of other fun sewing projects to dress my new body. The one other thing I splurged on {using a Target giftcard} were workout clothes. It might be silly but cute new workout clothes definitely helped motivate me to get out of the house and start working on this body!

4. Eat well and drink lots of water. I really don't know much about nutrition at all but I do know that when you're nursing you need to eat more than normal {more information here} and drink lots of water. My mom always tells me to drink at least one glass of water every time you sit down to nurse. And then you need to be drinking lots in between feedings as well of course. I am not dieting at all right now because I know I need to be eating well to produce enough milk for my little one. And I don't want to be stressing about it because that can also slow milk production. So while I am not dieting I am definitely focusing on eating well and drinking lots of water.
5. Exercise. Right now I am working on running a little bit every day and doing some ab workouts. I am trying to be careful with how hard I go on my body since I did have major surgery but it feels so good to be working out again.  I know that losing weight can take time and it can be frustrating to watch nothing happen on the scale so instead of weighing myself all the time and focusing on that as my working out goal I have decided to sign up for a race in the next couple of months so that I have something else to focus on and work towards.

While I am working on getting my body back into shape I do think it is important to remember that my body may not ever be exactly like it was before I had a baby. And that is okay. I just try to view these more permanent changes to my body {like stretch marks} as a reminder of the miracle that I was able to be a part of. These five things are working for me and helping me to be happy in this new, different body and I hope that these tips help someone else out there as well.

Oh, and before I go I do not want to forget to mention my wonderful husband. Race supports me in my goals, lets me go out and buy expensive jeans, and tells me every single day that I am beautiful. He is the best. I love him and I couldn't do any of this without him!
